A Sekondi High Court presided over by His Lordship Edward Amoako Asante,
yesterday opened the case of a former Medical superintendent with Essikado
Government Hospital who was accused of defrauding the National Health
Insurance Authority off thousands of Ghana cedis.
It will be recalled that in 2015 Dr. N.K Ametewee and his brother Francis
Ametewee were arrested by a high powered police personnel from Accra for
allegedly defrauding the National Health Insurance Authority of about 415, 000
The two accused persons have been on bail since then but have been charged with
stealing, abetment and falsification of document to deceive a public officer and
pleaded not guilty of all three charges leveled against them.
After prosecution had given his evidence through its first witness the court
adjourned the case to today for cross examination.
Dr. Ametewee is alleged to have submitted claims of over 400 NHIS card users
whom he claimed had patronized the services of his private clinic, West Anaji
Dental Clinic.

An audit discovered that between the periods January to December 2013 Dr
Ametewee had submitted the same names of NHIS card users for claims for the
Essikado District Hospital and for his private clinic.

That meant that after the claims for the government hospital had been paid, Dr
Ametewee, in a calculated attempt, systematically submitted the same names, after
a few weeks, to the NHIA to be paid the same amount for his clinic.
