A marine police Officer attached to the Marine Police headquarters here in the Western Region nearly got drowned on Friday August 31st as he attempted to arrest some fishermen for engaging in light fishing

Narrating his ordeal to Radio 360’s Kwame Malcolm in Takoradi on “Y3nsom”, Detective Sergeant Wonder Kpedator said he was beaten and manhandled by about 25 fishermen aboard the vessel after discovering they were fishing with light and was thrown into the high seas to die by the fishermen who said he should come to life again and try enforce the law if he can survive.

Some 25 fishermen aboard a fishing vessel named “Chelsea and Sampson” attacked 2 uniform police officers of the FEU at sea and threw one in the high seas to drown.

This is at the time Ghana’s fish stocks deplete by the count of the day due largely to illegal unreported unregulated (I.U.U) fishing practices by errant fishermen. Government in seeking to bring such errant behaviour to book by enforcing the Fisheries Act 2002 (Act 625) and the Fisheries Regulations 2010 (Legislative Instrument (L.I 1968), the Fisheries Enforcement Unit as prescribed by Section 94 of the Fisheries Act 625 was formed  ; however , some fishermen have decided to be adamant.
