Former Black Stars Striker Augustine Arhinful believes that the brouhaha that surrounds call ups of players into the senior national team can be put to bed, if the technical handlers come up with justifications behind these call ups.

Recent call-ups by Coach Kwasi Appiah have been met with fierce criticism with many labeling the selection criteria as flawed as well as puzzling in regards how some key players have been omitted.

Tensions escalated when Ghana lost the last game to Kenya in an AFCON 2019 qualifier after the Coach left out skipper Asamoah Gyan, Jordan Ayew, Andre Ayew, Wakaso Mubarak and some other key players.

Ahead of Ghana’s AFCON 2019 qualifying double header with Sierra Leone this month, the Coach has invited Gyan and Wakaso with the Ayew brothers-despite being active at club level– still missing out; leaving many to ponder what exactly their crime is.

Augustine Arhinful is in this vein opining that, press conferences should be organized for the head coach of the senior national team Kwasi Appiah to justify the selections he makes into the Black Stars.

This, he conceives, will bring conclusiveness to the fuss, as to why certain players are selected over the others.

”We have given Kwasi Appiah a job to do and for me to criticize him or say something contradictory to his call ups, I won’t do that. But each time there’s a call up from the coach, Ghanaians or a section of Ghanaians always seems to have an issue with it”, Augustine Arhinful told Michael Asare-Boadu on Empire 102.7 Sports World.

“We have all been in Europe and even in Ghana, before a national team coach releases his list there’s a presser. He puts his list out there before the press, questions are asked and the coach answers them. And then everything ceases and we move on, but it looks as if the call ups have always been a secret. There shouldn’t be any secret behind the call ups of players into the Black Stars. All that you will see, is that there’s a press release and then Me (Augustine Arhinful) and others will be worried by you radio people, for us to speak to the list which is out there. I beg you in the name of God that, if the coach will continue to invite players this way, it is not me Arhinful or Osei Kuffour who has to defend the list. I urge you all to put all those questions to the coach. I recently heard the coach in an interview, where the coach said that some of his colleagues want him to explain his call ups. I don’t think anyone wants him to explain his call ups but if the press conferences are organized people will stop reading meanings into the call ups.

Kwasi Appiah has received heavy public backlash following his decision to invite Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan of which concerns have been raised about his sharpness and fitness whiles leaving out other key players in his newly released squad for an upcoming AFCON qualifier.

Ghana will be playing their West African counterparts Sierra Leone in a double header AFCON 2019 qualifier on the 11th and 15th of this month. And Ghanaians would not like to witness what happened in Kenya, where the Black Stars were beaten by a lone goal in last month AFCON qualifiers.
