The draw for the 2017 edition of the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) tournament has been held successfully at a short ceremony in Accra, Ghana.

The competition which starts on September 9 and ends on September 24 has been categorized into two rounds.

The first round entails a knockout format where winners would be drafted into two groups of 4 teams each.

The 16-nation competition is sponsored by FOX Networks Group (FNG) who signed a mega partnership deal with the West Africa Football Union (Wafu) last year.

The tournament to be hosted by Ghana will have two venues, Takoradi and Cape Coast.

ZONE A (Takoradi)

Ghana vs. Gambia

Nigeria vs.  Sierra Leone

Mali vs. Mauritania

Guinea vs. Guinea Bissau

Matches would be played on September 9th.


ZONE B (Cape Coast)

Senegal vs. Liberia

Burkina Faso vs. Niger

Ivory Coast vs. Togo

Benin vs. Cape Verde

Matches would be played on September 10th.

IN A RELATED DEVELOPMENT, The prize money for the maiden Wafu Cup of Nations 2017 to be hosted by Ghana is pegged at US$100,000, a document available to indicates.

A breakdown of the prize monies to all participating teams available to are as follows:

Winner – USD100,000 (One hundred thousand dollars US)

Runner-up – USD 50, 000 (Fifty thousand dollars US)

Third place – USD 25, 000 (Twenty-five thousand dollars US)


Fourth place – USD 10, 000 (Ten thousand dollars US)

Four teams– USD 10,000 (Ten thousand dollars US) each


Four (4) teams x USD 5000 (Five thousand dollars US) each

Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to the Winners, runners-up and third place.

WAFU/FOX will also cater for air travel, hotel accommodation (full board & lodge) and local transport costs for all participating teams in the Tournament.
