A leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) , Kwesi Biney says the continuing neglect of the Western Region by governments is unfortunate. Speaking on Radio 360’s flagship programme , “Y3nsom” ; hosted by Kwame Malcolm, the NPP leading member and a one-time District Chief Executive under the former President Kufuor administration wondered why a military hospital will be built in Kumasi not the Western Region; “…we got people to build the military hospital in Kumasi when Komfo Anokye Hospital is next to Korle Bu in Ghana whilst our Regional Hospital (Effia Nkwanta) is collapsed…now we don’t have anything there and when people want better medical care , they have to travel to Cape Coast ..” ; the leading NPP member added. He posited that the Western Region suffers such fate and predicament partly also due to weak leadership in the region ; ” from whom much is taken , much should be given in return, much as we can’t fully say the region has not benefitted from any development ; one wonders who influences development for the Western Region to be denied a military hospital next after Greater Accra? when apart from Greater Accra, the next region to have the 3 arms of the Armed Forces for the purposes of serving the military , is the Western Region.. , that is the Navy , the Air Force and the Ghana Army ; on that basis , the region deserves a military hospital than the Ashanti Region ….even beyond this is also the position of the extractive industry in the region that in case of the issue of emergency medical cases ; there is no other better case for the Western Region ; ” the leading NPP member forcefully posited. He said though not being envious of the Central Region , the Western Region’s contribution to the national kitty is huge so a comparison of regional hospitals of both the Western and Central regions shows the Western Region as not being fairly treated. Blaming subsequent leaders of the region, he said those who make strong cases inspite of the scarce resources of the country , are able to get better development ;”..the political leaders and the traditional leaders of the region must constantly make a strong case and put pressure on government ; ” said the leading NPP politician making an analogy that a child that makes a parent uncomfortable is able to get some food to eat first; ” .
He wondered why the region is treated so shabbily blaming the leadership of the region over the years.
He said if it is a loan that is procured to construct the regional hospitals, most of the repayment of that loan will come from the Western Region due the resources it has ; he said a look at the road network of the Western and Central Regions without being envious , the Western Region is left undeveloped as Central region has close to 65-70 percent of its feeder roads tarred with less than 25 percent of that of the Western Region only tarred and wonders where if cocoa is harvested , what roads it will be transported on?
